BORN ON Long Island, New York, Bro. James was raised in Maryland. His family moved to California when he was in High School. He attended two and a half years at the University of California in San Diego.

In the summer of 1996 Bro. James arrived as an observer at St. Andrew's Abbey, and he professed solemn vows on July 11, 2001. He completed his study of philosophy at Saint Anselm College, New Hampshire, in 2002 and his Pontifical Baccalaureate in Theology at Sant' Anselmo (the International Benedictine House of Studies) in Rome in 2005.
